3️⃣ Introducing The Top Three: La Selecta's strong start + more
How we'll look back on each matchday of World Cup qualification ... & a look ahead to Monday and Tuesday's big games.
The top three. The three winners. That’s who is going through to the World Cup.
That’s how I’ll be breaking down each matchday on Getting CONCACAFed as well. After all six matchdays, we’ll go over The Top Three, the most important things to consider after each game, as the vibes shift, the mood changes and the match starts to indicate whose dream is realized and whose is disrupted, deferred until 2030.
Here’s today’s Top Three - plus a look ahead to the huge matches tonight and tomorrow:
Team of the matchday: El Salvador 🇸🇻
No one expected El Salvador to get a point out of its Thursday trip to Guatemala. After a miserable Gold Cup saw La Selecta bow out without a victory, expectations were low even in El Salvador.
Instead, Harold Osorio headed in a Nathan Ordaz corner kick, goalkeeper Mario Gonzalez repelled five shots and La Selecta is sitting pretty atop Group A after a 1-0 win over Los Chapines.
It was a huge victory for El Salvador, but La Selecta manager Hernan “Bolillo” Gomez has seen enough to know that the performance certainly can be better.
“What I liked most is the result,” he said after.
There is plenty for El Salvador to improve upon.
