Canada may go and win the thing, but it’s almost time to close the book on Concacaf’s performance at the Copa América.
This is the second time CONMEBOL has invited six teams from Concacaf to take part instead of the usual two, repeating what happened in the 2016 Copa América Centenario, which also took place in the U.S.
The ‘giants’ of the region totally disappointed and fell flat, with Mexico and the United States falling flat and staying in the group stage.
Two up-and-comers, though both with relatively recent appearances at the World Cup, made the quarterfinals, though one got thumped.
That sounds awfully familiar. In the 2016 Copa América Centenario, the United States made the semifinals and lost to Argentina, while Mexico fell 7-0 to Chile in the quarterfinal. No other Concacaf team advanced from the group stage.
Concacaf teams combined for 20 points in the group matches during that tournament. This time around they earned 21.
