π²π½ El Tri's celebrations show what it means to be Kings of Concacaf
Drinks were on ice, but the imbibing, dancing and celebrating eventually came for Mexico after its Gold Cup final win.
Reporting from Houston
Mexico had to wait to celebrate, but when the celebration came, they enjoyed it with full force.
Having gone down to the United States in the fourth minute of the Gold Cup final, El Tri needed to battle back. A Raul Jimenez goal in the 27th minute had things level, and Edson Alvarez headed the ball into the back of the net in the 77th minute. His celebrations were cut short by the offside flag. Yet, he wasnβt going to let a VAR review deny him the moment of celebrating a Gold Cup-winning goal in front of a capacity, pro-Mexico crowd.
After the referee awarded the goal, Alvarez took off sprinting for the end line where heβd scored, mobbed by teammates from on the field and those on the bench who had a shorter run.
βToday I was the one who scored, but I always say that itβs a team task,β Alvarez said after. βWith their sacrifices, it wouldnβt have been possible. But Iβm very happy.β

Edson was ready and enjoyed every second of the celebration, hugging teammates, saluting the crowd and soaking it in before getting in his trademark ear-plug and returning to the other side of the field for the final 15 minutes of the contest.
Other celebrations were not as forthcoming.
