Meaningless friendly? Maybe not as both teams now look toward official matches in the Nations League.

Writing to you back in Texas after a good Guadalajara trip

Administratively, Tuesday’s friendly between Mexico and the United States at the Estadio Akron was as good as it was going to get. With nearly every other national team otherwise occupied in October, a rivalry game in a soccer-crazed city that rarely hosts matches of this magnitude was an ideal solution.

The game was a friendly, but the 2-0 Mexico win may long echo for both national teams - and not because it ended the United States’ years-long undefeated run in the region’s best rivalry.

The game sets both teams on their paths for November’s Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals - two-legged series that are must-wins not only because of the expectation both teams have to be the top squad in the region but also because if the teams don’t reach the Nations League Final Four, their options for who to play in March would be extremely limited once again.

The United States’ perspective
