Reporting from Houston

A breath of fresh air. A wind of change. Magic.

All were terms brought up to describe Mexico’s first match under new manager Jaime β€œJimmy” Lozano.

Another word? A beatdown. Mexico was superior to Honduras for all 90 minutes of their Gold Cup Group B opener, with Luis Romo scoring in the second minute to kick off a 4-0 rout at NRG Stadium on Sunday.

β€œToday we had a magical scenario. I think the team, from the opening whistle was convinced in what we wanted to do and that’s what we were looking for most,” Lozano said after the match. β€œWe wanted to create chances, which always gets you closer to winning games.

β€œIt’s a very important first step and a solid one, but not anything more than that.”

To call it a honeymoon phase would be understating it.
