When Heimir Hallgrímsson arrived as the Jamaica manager in 2022, he saw a team with all the ingredients to be a success. The Reggae Boyz can call on players competing in top leagues like the Premier League. There are rising stars on the island moving abroad. There’s a style of play to be deployed that can take advantage of Jamaica’s speedsters and physical defenders.

Several years later, those ingredients are still there simmering, stewing, but it still hasn’t hit a boiling point. There hasn’t been that moment that makes you say: Yes, Jamaica has arrived.

But it’s coming, or at least Hallgrímsson thinks it is. The manager who made a reputation as a giant-killer sees just one difference between his group and the Mexico team that beat Jamaica 1-0 in their opening match of Copa América.
