We all knew we’d be reading that sentence some time this summer, well before Mexico attempted to qualify for the 2024 Copa América this fall. The surprise is not that it happened. It’s not even when it happened, days after a disastrous 3-0 loss to the United States in the semifinal of the Concacaf Nations League.
It’s how it happened.
Juan Carlos “La Bomba” Rodriguez was expected to remove Cocca, to make his own hire in the most fan-facing role in Mexico soccer, that of Mexico men’s national team manager. But even with that expectation, just how emphatically Rodriguez came out and expressed his decision.
The new commissioner put his stamp on the program and more with Monday’s announcement.
Rodriguez appeared in a video uploaded to the FMF’s social media channels saying he wanted to speak to the fans. He did so for five minutes, issuing scathing criticisms of Cocca.
