Anibal Godoy couldn’t explain it. Who could?

He was in a great position to see the handball that curtailed Panama’s hopes of finally breaking through, of being able to stop pulling out the 2009 Copa UNCAF if anyone remembers that as proof this baseball country has a trophy to its name.

The Panama team who had pulled off a perfect game plan in the semifinal to reach the final against Mexico once again was sitting where they wanted to be, heading toward extra time and perhaps penalties.

Then, it happened. Jose Cordoba had his arm out for reasons unclear to anyone, turning a harmless free kick that was going out of play into a penalty converted by Raul Jimenez to give Mexico a 2-1 victory and the first Concacaf Nations League trophy not won by the United States.

β€œWhat can I say? It’s a difficult moment,” Godoy told the host broadcaster. β€œWe have to continue …” he went on before exhaling and shaking his head. β€œHonestly, I really am speechless. The group gave everything. We wanted the victory for our country, for us. It hurts. It’s three finals lost, personally.”
