SoFi Stadium. Mexico vs. Panama, a trophy on the line. Mexico hoping to re-establish regional dominance. Panama hoping for a first major trophy at the continental level.

It’s on tap tonight in the Concacaf Nations League final, and also was on tap at the 2023 Gold Cup final two summers ago.

This may not be the most remembered Gold Cup final of all-time. The United States was out (thanks to Panama’s victory in a penalty shootout - and the fact they were using a weakened squad) and Lionel Messi was being introduced as a new Inter Miami player at the same time. So, there were some distractions.

The big takeaways at the time were that Mexico was back on its Concacaf perch and that Santi Gimenez finally had his breakout moment, bound for many more El Tri goals.

Some things have changed since then.
